The forums really haven't been the same since 2005-2006 about, and I'm sure there are people (oldies like Vlad or Oto) who will say it happened even before then. We got mainstream, and with the sheer number of people registering and posting, certain trends come out, such as "FIRST POST!" and the rest. My theory is that all forums have a certain maximum level of intelligence that can be collectively reached, the more people, the less intelligent each individual member has to be.
I'm sure it would be advantageous to become more involved once again, but it's now become more of a chore than it used to be. That's how I see it, anyway.
