  • Comments: Of all my videos from my early music video career, this is in my top 3 favorites. I loved this one to death, and to a certain extent, I still do. I think this video marks "phase 3" of my music video making life: the first phase being the initial batch of videos made using the 2-VCR method, and the second phase being the videos I made from 1999-January 2000 on the computer. I think, starting with this video, I truly began to understand concepts of timing and story-telling. Though things were still not perfect (such as the video capture quality, and encoding the videos for distribution in RealVideo format), I think this video shows signs of how far I actually had come.

As a longtime DBZ fan, I found things about the show, little things, that I liked more than the actual main plots. One of those things was the variety and intensity of the relationships. I noticed that in addition to the standard relationships (i.e- Goku/Chi-Chi), there were a few that had a bit of sexual tension and innuendo (Vegeta/Bulma, Krillin/#18, and Trunks/Pan to a small degree). I thought, "hmm, there's a lot more sexuality in this show than people realize, and I wanna bring these raging hormones to light." That said, I made this video in which I hoped to show people the sexuality of some of the characters, or just their plain hotness, and relationships to one another.

The video starts off with, for me at that point in my life, a rather impressive and cleanly timed introduction, showing some sexy headshots of the main characters of the video. There's also a bit of attention paid to movement, as scene cuts from one person to the news kind of flow into each other, as each person "looks" to the next. There's even an order to the characters I used in this intro (see my Utena - "Liberation of Memories Past" video for an idea of what I'm talking about in terms of intros with character relationships). The order is as follows: Goku, Chi-Chi, Vegeta, Bulma, Trunks, and so on. If you know the series, then you'll see a small connection. :P

The video progresses with some actual instances of characters looking sexy, and doing actions to the beats. Wow, I was so proud of this back then! *squeal* For example, I show Pan winking, Trunks falling onto a bed, Videl striking a pose, Goten giving a peace sign, and.. Videl putting her crotch in Gohan's face... on all the beats (more or less). Can ya feel the sexual tension brewing!?

As for the song, I absolutely love it in a completely dorky fan-girl way. :) The song is from the North American Sailor Moon soundtrack "Lunarock." The song is a very catchy, dancy, sexy, drum and bass tune, which is why I picked it for this video. Plus, the lyrics match the scenes nicely.

Some of my favorite examples of lyric-matching in this video are:

    - "My heart's beating for you stronger" / Bulma's heart beating going ga-ga over Zarbon
    - "You and I would be in total perfection" / Gohan and Videl doing sexy Great Saiyaman poses n sync with each other

    ... and so on.

Another favorite part in the video is the instrumental "sexy" breakdown section. Scenes of various characters, actually almost timed to the music, cut from one person to another, all going to the grand finale which is... a naked Vegeta in the shower. Yes, yes, very fan-girlish and immature of me, but it had to be done. :P

After this point, the video slows down quite a bit. Although, I did do some interesting things, such as my first instance of a gay/yaoi moment in a music video between Krillin and #17 (I would later expand on this sick idea in my video "This Was Never Meant to Be"). The video then draws to a close with a moving scene (for this video at least) of Goku leaving Chi-Chi.

That's not to say that this video is not without it's flaws. There are many moments of filler scenes (Krillin pinching Bulma's cheeks. What's up with that?), and others. But overall, I can't believe that I was able to make something this... watchable, considering the time that I made this.

Like I said, I think this video marks a new trend in my older videos, in which I pay more attention to editing and scene choices. It's a pretty big jump from my videos made two months prior to this in January 2000 (maybe I took a 2 month break from videos for a reason... I honestly don't remember), and I think it shows. If you have any of these of videos of mine in RealVideo format saved somewhere, I recommend checking this one out, and compare it to ones made in 1999 to see the big change in my work. :P
