  • Comments: Go boldly go where nobody else dares: not quite the SH mission, but apt enough for video #71, which is the first skinhead-music video listed on AMV.org. As promised, there's a full explantion-cum-apologia here.

For me at least, skinhead music is all about freedom. I started listening to skin bands in a period in my life when for the first time I was completely on my own, with no family or roommates crimping my style. I worked hard, went hungry when there wasn't enough money to pay all the bills, and did whatever I wanted to with my own time. The mood was of independence and self-reliance, and skin music fit in well with that.

Not because I was turning into a racist or anything, but just because skinhead oi! is the last true form of real punk music, because it's not acceptable to anyone but its adherents. Normal leftist punk may say it's criticizing society, and being ground down by The Man, but the truth is that leftist critiques are tolerated. Leftist punk concerts aren't cancelled or picketed. To become a white racialist skinhead is the ultimate declaration of independence from society, because by defending those beliefs, you know that every hand in the civilized world will be raised against you.

Of course, there were still the basic issues keeping me from going overboard and shaving down: that most skinhead music is much, much, worse than most metal, and that by most Nazi definitions, I do not count as a white person. But I still dig Skrewdriver and Landser for their music, and, true to the Loki-spirit of metal, I still wanted to do a skinhead AMV at some point. Then I got Colorful, and the idea for this video took shape.

As it stands, this video is highly tongue-in-cheek. The video images seek out and explode the objectionable lyrical lines, leaving only a fun punk tune with humorous visuals. Intelligent people will see this as a redemptive action, lifting up both Ian Stuart's catchy music and Colorful's inherent silliness out of the acceptability ghettos that they otherwise would have been confined to. Of course, there are going to be people who don't get it, on both sides. Nazis who may see this video may call the videography a Jewish action, and there may be anime-fan viewers who may call the music choice fascist. But of course, that's the way it's meant to be, in the true spirit of Loki, sowing dissention: to piss off everyone and make no one happy.

Effects in this video are pretty limited; two or three shots are flipped horizontally to cover up the reuse factor, and there are two cuts over which was laid a British flag drawn by yours truly. Most of the lip-synch shots getting characters to say "the voice" are pretty much on, but there are a few that aren't, and if I was going to be real anal I probably could have done more in this area, but that's not the SH way.

Amazingly, this is also the first AMV listed using Colorful.

Shin Hats Self Grade: A-. It's cool, it's funny, but it's likely to get banned from competition once the contest coordinator hears Stuart say "media Zionists".
