Comments:
I first had the idea for this video sometime in 2002 or 2003. I had previously edited an end credit montage sequence for a project using this song and found it to be infectious and fun. Thinking of combining it with "Kodomo No Omocha" was almost instantaneous, given the show's sense of whimsy and Sana's independent nature.
Early on, I became very attached to isolating a shot of Babbit playing the guitar and drums for the song's finale. There were two problems with this. First, because of rights issues, the US release of the show did not include the first season opening titles at all. Second, the Chinese DVD I had of season one used a high compression rate in order to fit 9 episodes per disc. This made finding clean frames of Babbit from the opening very difficult, and even more difficult to work with in Photoshop.
In addition, I was determined to use a specific shot from the show's second season opening in the finale. Although this was the sequence used for all episodes in the US release, for some reason, the distributor did not offer a version without titles, and the shot I wanted to use had titles over it.
Because of these problems, I continued to shelf this video over the years, hoping that someday I could get a better quality copy of the season one opening, or title-less opening credits for season two. However, the song was always so much fun that in early 2009, I finally gave in and decided to see what I could make of it.
The solution to the shot from the second season opening came as I scrubbed through the episodes. I found a shot that had a similar effect, and in which the characters were much more readable, anyway. To solve the Babbit problem, I asked Studio Hybrid's Nic Neidenbach to take a crack at matting him out. Mad props to him! He had it done within a day, and I was able to finish the video in time for deadline.
The video was edited in a couple of weekends using Final Cut Pro 6 running on my MacBook Pro.
