My goal in producing “Evangelion.0: You (Musn’t) Run Away” was to encompass all the emotions and struggles than Shinji Ikari endures through out Neon Genesis Evangelion. There’s frustration, anger, sadness, confusion, and anything in between aside from “happy.” I also wanted to incorporate as many elements of the show as I could into the AMV in order to remain faithful to the series and make it feel a bit less removed from the show. For this reason, shots depicting squiggly lines (in the show, they mimic sound waves) and sketchbook style animations were added. In the series, there are sequences where we observe what’s going on inside Shinji’s head; what he’s thinking and feeling. He’s usually stuck on something traumatizing or trying to understand what “reality” is, and that is where these representations come in. The two features aforementioned are probably the only parts of my AMV that will only be understood by those who have seen NGE in its entirety. Other than that, I tried to make my AMV in such a way that someone with no prior knowledge of the show could follow it to a fair extent.

I chose “Hand of Sorrow” as the song for this video because the lyrics mimic Shinji’s life. He has been forced to pilot the Eva and do things he doesn’t always agree with, he has girl problems, he doesn’t see the real point in what his father and NERV are trying to conduct or why he has to be involved. Shinji spends the entire series struggling with the cards he has been dealt, and although there is some allusion to what may have happened under different circumstances, there is no real instance where Shinji is ever happy or where anything seems to go right for him. Nothing goes right in the song either.
Aside from the lyrics, the song has a variety of high energy and low energy points. This made it very easy to use shots containing different emotions, and put them together to weave it into a story and fulfill my idea of what this AMV should be.
