Comments:
Having admired the work of Satoshi Kon for many years, I was shocked and saddened by his untimely demise in 2010, so a tribute video was a natural next step. Gary Jules' haunting cover of "Mad World" from "Donnie Darko" seemed like a perfect choice, as Kon's work always seemed to revolve some sort of twisted version of reality. To this end, I decided to include the "Magnetic Rose" segment from "Memories", which Kon wrote, but did not direct.
Work began in earnest in late 2010, with the video finally completed in January 2011. I used Final Cut Pro 7, and the total amount of work added up to about a full day or two. Technically, I was limited primarily by the quality of the DVD release of "Perfect Blue", which has not been re-done since the original release. This quality was reduced even further by zooming the widescreen clips to fit the 16:9 frame. I decided to err on the side of consistency of aspect ratios at the expense of quality of a few clips in the video.
