  • Comments: With a new year, it's time for me to work on my "Winter Collection" video (the term that describes an AMV I made using an anime from the Winter season) for 2020. This year, the show that really got my attention was BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense, thanks in part to designs for the show's main character, Maple. It takes a couple episodes to set things up (one for Maple to gain her trademark look; half of the second one for her friend, Sally, to get her trademark gear, with the anime opting to have Maple sport her "newcomer" look during this section instead of keeping her main look like in the manga). However, once that is done, the show became of the better VRMMORPG anime titles out there.

The idea of the this video first popped up on the Reddit discussions of the show's first episode, when someone asked when there was going to be a video that set the show to the theme music of the 1990's heel wrestling stable new World order. Naturally, the joke was that the name of the VRMMORPG was called NewWorld Online, with the game having the name acronym as the nWo. However, after episode five, in which Sally goes on a massive PK spree on the penultimate night of the second event and Maple casts an Acid Rain spell on a group of monsters while riding on her turtle companion (DOES NOT COMPUTE!!!), that this anime/song pairing could actually work.

In terms of MMORPG guilds, Maple and her guild, Maple Tree, can easily be considered radicals, with the GM's being nervous about them (especially Maple). Maple herself has become well known thanks to a build that makes her impossible to hurt and all the insane skills that she's gained through dumb luck. As for the rest of Maple Tree, even if they are a small group, they are still a powerful force consisting some skilled players, an adorable set of twins who min-max their strength, a child genius, and a skilled craftslady. As such, it felt like it would be a fun idea to depict the antics of Maple Tree (both their status as a legitimate threat and some of the crazy things Maple does) in the style of an nWo promo video (complete with the black and white cinematography that the old promos have).
