  • Comments: Is it still cool to hate on Taylor Swift? Ah well, whatever.

I've had this idea for over five years. Around then I got into Taylor Swift's music (which, believe it or not, I had managed to pretty much avoid up until that point) and listened through the album off of which this song came. The very first time I heard it I immediately thought of Lovely Complex, and how well it would work to show Ootani's and Koizumi's relationship. I actually even clipped the first two episodes back in May of 2015, but never followed through after those and just kind of left the idea to sit until I had the motivation to actually finish it. As so often happens, it took way longer than I had anticipated, but quarantine has given me time to go back through these old projects and actually, you know, edit them.

I, uh, didn't care much for LovCom, to be perfectly honest -- I always felt like the two main characters were way too mismatched and that their whole relationship seemed really forced, especially from Ootani's side. I also couldn't stand the constant abuse they both hurled at one another -- comedic relief is one thing but some of their interactions just really rubbed me the wrong way and I never felt like they made a good couple. But that's exactly why I wanted to make this video -- I wanted to show why they were horrible for each other and give the anime the interpretation it probably deserves most. And I can't deny that the animation in the show is super fun -- I love how colorful it is and how many visual gags and goofy deformations and stuff are found in every corner of the thing. I thought it would be a really fun source to work with, and I was right. This video came out pretty much exactly how I wanted it to.

I've cited it as a source of inspiration before, but even moreso here, Kusoyaro's Build Me Up Buttercup basically acted as the template for this video. The super high-energy editing from beginning to end, the heavy lyric sync, and the overall vibe of both videos are very similar. It's actually been a long time since I've made this many cuts in a video and paid such close attention to the video's flow and visual rhythm from beat to beat. This video was fairly arduous to work on at times, but I'm really, really pleased with the result -- in every video that I set out to make where I want it to feel somewhat "random" and non-narrative, I pretty much always end up including some sort of chronological progression in my scene selection. I managed to more or less completely avoid that in this video -- there is no overarching story, really, at least not in the sense that it's one you would follow from the beginning of the song to the end. Instead, this is purely an anti-romance about these two characters and their terribly dysfunctional relationship.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

    Technical notes
Edited entirely in Magix Vegas Pro 15.0. Total editing time was...probably 20-25 hours or so over the course of about a week and a half.
