  • Comments: Hiroyuki Imaishi is my favourite director of anime. I tried to use all the shows where he directed some episodes or the whole series in mostly chronological order.

    Anime:
    0:00 - His and Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) - Episode 19 - 1999
The first episode Imaishi was in control of. Production of this anime was severely hampered by Gainax having basically no budget left at this point. His creative way of using paper cutouts caught the eye of the industry and kickstarted his carrer.
    0:27 - FLCL - Episode 5 - 2001
This time with much more budget, Imaishi was animation director of what is by many considered the best episode of FLCL. His iconic fluid but abstract American cartoon inspired animation style made its first appearance.
    0:49 - Dead Leaves - 2004
This is the first movie Imaishi had full control over and he went fully crazy with an adult cartoon animation style.
    1:11 - Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi - Episode 3 - 2002
Imaishi was tasked directing a mecha-themed parody episode. The mecha designs from this episode served as a base for some of his later works.
    1:22 - Re: Cutie Honey - Episode 1 - 2005
One of the re-boots of the very first magical girl anime, Imaishi was tasked directing episode one and as expected, delivered.
    1:34 - Gurren Lagann - 2007
This is the first full series Imaishi directed and it was a worldwide success. He was inspired by older super robot anime so he made one with epic proportions himself.
    1:55 - Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt - 2011
For the second full series under his direction, he made an American style adult cartoon himself. He started to experiment a lot with 3D animation here.
    2:10 - Space Patrol Luluco - 2016
Imaishi eventually chose to quit his employer Gainax and start his own studio, Trigger, and pulled much of the animation staff he usually worked with along. Their first work was a short parody named Inferno Cop, the namesake character makes an appearance in the later released series Space Patrol Luluco directed by Imaishi, so I included it here, along with a very convenient pistol trigger animation.
    2:23 - Kill la Kill - 2014
The first full series Imaishi directed at his own studio Trigger became another hit success. A lot of 3D animation was used again.
    2:42 - Promare - 2019
This movie takes his 3D animation direction to a new level, integrating it very well with the 2D bits. Many action scenes are done in one insanely long shot.
    2:53 - Star Wars: Visions - Episode 3 - 2021
Imaishi and Trigger were invited to direct and animate this short episode. Of course he had to take a lightsaber battle in space to epic proportions.
    3:04 - Cyberpunk: Edgerunners - 2022
Polish game developer CD Project Red hired Trigger to produce a promotional anime series for their game Cyberpunk 2077. It ended up significantly boosting the popularity of the game and was another international hit. A bit unusual for Imaishi, this is not a whacky cartoon or show of epic proportions in space, but a rather compelling story (albeit still with plenty of violent action).
