  • Comments: Shin Hatsubai video #79 took a long time to develop, mostly because I was sick all through July 2003. In the end, though, it met expectations: a decent little video that I can let out in public unescorted.

    Vital stats:
anime: Peacock King: Spirit Warrior (aka Kujaku-oh) [v2 only]
music: "Fire Below" by Gamma Ray [edit]
    runtime: 3:24

Source for this video was captured en bloc into 8Mbps MPEG2 from commercial VHS on the tape's first playing. This show will be released by CPM on DVD, but not for another couple months. The song is off Gamma Ray's No World Order CD, but I had to cut out a chorus and the whole solo and bridge sections to make it work.

Effects are pretty minimal; there's only one place where I was not able to do the effect that I wanted. There was something screwed up about the clip leading into the first chorus that prevented me from strobing the end of it accurately. FX include strobe, layering, colorization, one invert, and some levels adjustment.

The 'spoilers' note is only for the second in the series of 5 OVAs. I'm not sure if it gives away anything later, since I've only seen the first two, and they were pretty unconnected.

'Other' here should signify "test of zero-cost-of-access plotting". With sources this obscure, you have to have a point interior to the video (besides the primary objective of 'videograph the song'). And with sources this obscure, any story that you do has to be accessible to people watching it who have no point of reference in the sources. It's tough to do, especially since you the editor have obviously watched the anime to make the video, and are no longer in perfect position to determine what is or isn't ZCoA, but it's a good goal to work towards. People bitch about seeing just the same old titles over and over again, and then turn around and complain that they can't get into videos made with stuff they don't know. ZCoA smooths that over. It's not going to turn people who just watch what they see on TV into CDJapan junkies overnight, but it may help take the community another step towards diversity and new ideas.

Shin Hats Self Grade: B-. There's sort of a story, and I don't know that I kept it strictly ZCoA, so the grade will go down a little.
Stats: #clips: 90. avg length: 2.27 sec. total time: 14.5 hours.

P.S. First person to leave a meaningful op that correctly identifies where I got the video title from wins the con-quality MPEG2 version of this on CD.
