This was the second track I did for the DDR Project. As soon as I heard the song, I was immediately reminded of the cheesy 80's pop songs used for the opening and ending songs of my favorite anime of all time, Maison Ikkoku.
I didn't have Maison source though, and I wasn't about to pay Viz's astronomical prices for it. So my original idea was to use Love Hina, which had a X-mas episode to fit the lyrics. I only had Love Hina in Divx though, and with subs...
Then came A-kon 12...where I found about 15 used Maison Ikkoku dub tapes for $7 each. I'm a sucker for Maison, even dubbed, and I didn't have any of it (I watched it originally on some olllllld Arctic fansubs), so I snatched them all up.
That also happened to be the weekend I first met my girlfriend (A-kon & girlfriend = completely exclusive events. I did NOT pick up a chick at a convention!). The tapes kind of reminded me of that first weekend with her, so when I finally decided to use Maison for the song, I dedicated the video to her.
Luckily, I also happened to have two X-mas episodes in my stack of tapes, so it fit the song perfectly. I think I really captured the feel of both the song and the anime...it's the kind of sappy stuff that really breaks me up sometimes.
I'm a tad bit disappointed in the amount of romantic footage I was able to find, though...the romance in MI progresses VERY slowly, and most of the episodes I had in the tapes were pretty silly. But it still worked out decently.
Favorite parts of the video:
The "it's such a special day" part where Kyoko is getting dressed, and then all 3 perfume sprays hit on the bells.
During the "stars disappear" lyric when Kyoko does a little twirl.
"Great, you are the most incredible dancer! You're beautiful!" - speaks for itself ^_^
UPDATE: People don't seem to grasp this, so let me clarify here on exactly why the video cuts off at the end: the DDR project was a massive collaborative project in which editors each made a video to an individual track from a long, non-stop mix of songs. Because the entire mix is continuous, each track in the mix cut off so it could be blended together with the other 30-odd videos in the mix.
