Of Demons and Religion
Dedication: To Mizuki Ishida. Nothing pleases me more than knowing a reader was interested enough to look at my videos. These are as close as I can get to visualizing fanfiction, so I'm very happy to know others see what I was aiming for and enjoy them as much as I do. ^_^
This video is told from Kurama's point of view, namely since I have this inherent connection between his voice actor (Ogata Megumi) and Alanis - I can't hear Alanis without thinking of Kurama. This song has always been a favorite of mine, with the way she picks at religion while also admitting how desperately people *need* something to believe in, something to put their faith in, something constant and dependable to stand for them. That's the connection I've used for this video. It isn't about Catholicism, it's about faith and being ostrasized, put into a group but standing outside of that group. Kurama is a demon who's been surplanted into a human form, but he will always be what he is - a demon in human guise. This video focuses on him and the demons he interracts with, namely Hiei as his partner (romantic or close friends, it doesn't matter here since the co-dependency is the same). Other minor characters mentioned include Touya, who Kurama has definite rapport with in both tournaments, and Itsuki, who affects both Kurama and Hiei to the point where they want to kill him to put him out of his misery. There are flashes of a few others, but only Yomi really plays a significant role as Kurama's 'advisor' of sorts - which goes with the support he gives Kurama despite all the history between them.
The theme? Demons may be religious, but other than Enma there is no authority, no figurehead mentioned in the anime. That leaves no 'otherworldly' person for them to use as their 'standard' for faith, support, rapport. So they believe in each other because that's all they have.
One note on the 'yaoi' twist, Alanis has a line in the song that twists the Priest/girl relationship - the 'I'll see *you* next Sunday' line. I couldn't resist but play at that, so the video isn't entirely serious. It does have a cute part or two mixed in for fun. ^.~

Lyrics:
You know how us Catholic girls can be
We make up for so much time a little too late
I never forgot it, confusing as it was
No fun with no guilt feelings
The sinners, the saviors, the loverless priests
I'll see you next Sunday
Chorus:
We all had our reasons to be there
We all had a thing or two to learn
We all needed something to cling to
So we did
I sang Alleluia in the choir
I confessed my darkest deeds to an envious man
My brothers they never went blind for what they did
But I may as well have
In the name of the Father, the Skeptic and the Son
I had one more stupid question
Repeat Chorus
What I learned I rejected but I believe again
I will suffer the consequence of this inquisition
If I jump in this fountain, will I be forgiven
Repeat Chorus
We all had delusions in our head
We all had our minds made up for us
We had to believe in something
So we did
