  The idea for this video came into my head as an extension of another amv idea I had. I'm a big fan of the show SuperGALS and I like this idea of Tasukichi arriving on the scene and teaching everyone to dance. The original thought didn't instantly make me think of this song, it made me think of the 50s song "Do you love me" by The Contours which is in many ways very similar to the song I ended up with. It was actually my 3rd attempt at doing a video for pro - I ditched the first two ideas because I wasn't excited enough about making them.
  
  The final part of the idea was that I really wanted to make a video where the actual dances talked about were represented as much as possible. I remember being annoyed by the fact that Brad Demoss' Twist video only had one scene with that dance in it and it was taken from Austin Powers!
  
  The Song
  
  I love this song. LOVE IT. It has always been my favourite from the Blues Brothers soundtrack cd which was one of the first CDs I ever bought. Once I listened to the song in relation to the idea I'd had I knew I had to make the video - the song is so much fun and I was getting more and more excited about the idea every time I listened to it.
  
  Due to the design of the video, the song had to be changed. I couldn't find a good match for the dance "The Mashed Potato" and so I removed it from the song. In order to keep the vocal pattern a second dance had to be removed (The Jerk). I also reorganised the dances at the end so that the Vash one is last. That dance I label as "The Fool" is actually "The Fruh" in the original but the first lyrics I read called it the fool and I decided to stick with that for my comic needs.

  Making the Video
  
  The video starts off fairly simplistically, with mostly straight cuts once the RTIC-like retro opening is over. Due to the great footage in SuperGALS the video started to quickly turn into something really enjoyable. I was hooked into the video and couldn't turn back. It was only by the time I started doing motion masking that I realised I was in for a long haul.
  
  The first masked scene (the first "bend over" chorus) started off as an experiment. The first two girls already had cute backgrounds but Ran-chans dance is taken from her celebrating on a school table so it needed a new background so I decided to play around with things. Once I'd done the mask I realised I could make it look something like Deee-lite's "Groove is in the Heart" music video. So I did and the realised I'd have to have the others look the same :)
  
  The next tricky section was the Kodocha section. I have the DVDs for Kodomo no Omocha but they do not contain the creditless opening for Season 2. In fact, it seems that the only version of the creditless opening was distributed on a bonus CD that came with the laserdisc boxset. Suffice to say I do not have this. What I did manage to find, however, is the very old cinepak-encoded 320x240 version! Obviously the quality of this was so low that it would stand out a mile (as it does in Odorikuru even when scaled down). So, in order to combat the evil credits for the scene I cut and pasted sections of the creditless version (tweaked). The overall effect is great but if you look really closely you can see the joins :)
  
  It's all smooth sailing from now on until the final dance medley. At this point the video has taken about 8 days to make and there are 10 days left until the AWA Pro deadline - I needed at least a week to do all the masking I had to do. To be honest I didn't fully appreciate what I was getting into at the time. Masking one frame is fine but masking things that move is another thing entirely. Luckily some of the anime was cheaply made so I'd only need to mask out 8 or 10 frames and loop them - however some anime and one live action source in particular were harder. The live action source at 67 frames of hell and it took over 12 hours of constant editing to do that simple looking section. It was worth it though.
  
  The one thing I've been asked about the most is the background for that final section and how I did it. It was surprisingly easy actually. I wanted some pattern that had a distinctly retro feel to it, so I took one that was pre-made - in this case a bunch of paintings by Andy Warhol called Camouflage. I put the image (with slightly tweaked colours) into After Effects and warped it around.

  The video has only been submitted to one contest (AWA Pro 2004) where it won Best Dance, Best Upbeat and Best Video.
  
  The Online Encode
  
  The distro version was encoded with Xvid 1.0.2 and should work with DivX 5 (if you have the "support generic mpeg4" option selected). It will also work with ffdshow and the xvid decoder too.
