  • Comments: SH093 was the first SH video done with Magix on Battlefreak, and the result is...well...see for yourself. The tightness of the editing is somewhat of a cause for concern (if only due to my stats-based process), but the video flows with the song, and if you were expecting causality out of a Cat Soup video, you've got another thing coming, as it were. The effects design is a little more overt than it's been in the past, but the video never gets overwhelmed by them....IMO anyways, though the closing animation is a little left-field. The 3D bits were scavenged from various sources a long time ago, not specifically for use in this video.

The "Other" bit in the categories listed above should probably be read as "disturbing"; there is a lot of bizarre cartoon violence in this one, and distinct cruelty to animals, as indicated in the opening card. People who become viscerally disturbed easily should probably not watch this.

Shin Hats Self-Grade: B. It's decent, but short, meandering, and vacuous, without a real center to it.

About the music: Bix Beiderbecke is most often ranked between King Oliver and Louis Armstrong among the trumpet players of the first age of jazz. Like Armstrong, he learned his trade on the Mississippi riverboats (coming down from Iowa instead of up from New Orleans), and like Armstrong, he developed a distinctive style that progressively pulled him further and further ahead of the bands he played with -- particularly since he was forced to play solely with white musicians. Pre-existing emotional problems and the frustration of basically being barred from playing with the other top musicians of his day led him to drink gin like football players drink Gatorade, and to death from acute liver failure before the age of 30. He is, even to this day, probably the most soulful white boy ever to pick up the horn.
