  • Comments: In Flames: aggressive, progressive, and not making sense, on this song and almost always. What anime fits that bill? None such as FMP. This vid, Shin Hatsubai catalog #43, breaks the previous record for transitions, the 13 held by video #32, with a whopping 24 -- nearly double. This video also has the first use of digital post-processing for Shin Hats; I used Virtual Dub and some creative editing to beef up a needlessly weak clip.

I originally conceived this idea as a dramatic video, and it might have worked that way, but the overarching idea was to bring out the mysticism in the anime and music, keying between the 'black-technology' composites and Anders' not-making-sense lyrics, and that naturally drew in a lot of cuts of mechs blowing each other up with psionic powers. It turned an ok dramatic concept into a good, smart actioner, and at the same time affirmed my long-held conviction that putting too many giant robots into a video causes problems. It's a good lesson to have BEFORE I start on the Evergrey-Argent Soma video on my to-do list.

This video was submitted for competition at CNAnime 2002, where it won Best Action, and also included in the fall '02 BAS demo.

Shin Hats Self-Grade: A-/B+. A good idea, and there are parts where this vid shines, but the reminder again is still to take every last little cut; I was floundering in places here where more source could have saved the day. Damn good as it is though.
