  • Comments: This is my first video made in a combat zone. That's right, I am in Baghdad as I type this and was here the whole time I worked on it. I spent nights on the roof of our command center, listening to car bombs and helicopters, small arms fire and sirens, with the screen brightness turned way down, painstakingly manipulating mask keyframes and creating effects. One night, six large explosions vibrated the building...I dropped my mouse and picked up my M16/M203 and ran outside. After everything was called all clear, I came back it and got back on After Effects.

I knpw that there are some truists out there that will say that Final Fantasy, the Spirits Within is not Anime. Well, videos made with Appleseed won at AWA this year (congrats, Kham) so I figure this qualifies, too.

Ok, so...the concept behind this video. First, don't apply your knowledge of the storyline of the movie or the genre to the video concept. My vision for this was to portray Aki (the female lead role) as a dark character who dreams of the end of the world, and her dreams come true. The intent is to portray AKi as intially unsure of the meaning behind her dreams, and at the same time, being almost schizophrenically malevolent about them. I attempt to portray a progression of dreaming and waking behavior that shows Aki growing more evil and more in control of the dream state as it becomes more real. Over the course of the story, Aki and the Captain (who I portray as the soldier attempting to kill her in the ship, and being dragged spiritually into her dream) become increasingly unable to separate the dream of Armageddon from reality, and in the final scene, I attempt to leave the impression that the line between dream and reality is about to disappear, or may have already done so, as AKi closes her eyes to have one final iteration of the dream of the end of the world.

I have limited access to resources here (electricity for one, internet connectivity for another, media is a third.) I apologize about the sub-par audio encode. It is clean enough in my opinion to be passable, and when I get a chance, I will probably buy the CD and re-master the audio, but for now this is the best I can do from Iraq. It shouldn't be distracting to any but the most devout audiophiles.

Many thanks go to Icy Cloud of AquaSky productions for her continued Beta testing support. SHe is so damn good it's scary. And thanks again to you for taking the time to check out my work. I hope you enjoy it.
