  • Comments: Greetings,

For my first solo project, I've worked diligently for a month to produce a Super Smash Bros Melee video done to the main theme of Metal Gear Solid 2. I have always been a fan of well-done orchestral pieces, and upon hearing this song, I was inspired to do a video to it. I had considerd using anime for the music, but my thoughts always drew me to Super Smash Bros Melee. The music really didn't fit for anime footage, but I felt it worked considerably well with CG footage. And with the added camera mode to Melee, this video became a reality.

Most of my work, fanfiction included, has been in the comedic category. It always brings me great joy to entertain whatever audience I'm aiming at. And with this in mind, I not only wanted to make the video a satirical work, but also an action work. So, rather than just sticking together a bunch of blooper-like scenes, I concentrated on action scenes with a comedic theme.

I chose to use old video game footage for the introduction to establish a kind of Nintendo chronology. Older viewers can reminisce on the original Nintendo games as the video gradually builds to the body of the video. I wanted to give the audience a sense of how far along video games have come and how impressive the games of today really are. The MGS2 Main Theme introduction fits what I wanted perfectly.

I tried to keep from using too much of the game's intro, since that would be kind of an easy way to plug footage. I used a considerable amount from it, but it only makes up a fraction of the video. Most of the footage is from action scenes or cinematic scenes in actual gameplay. The footage was gathered over the span of over ten shoots, simply because I didn't want to use scenes from the same battles. Melee has a rich variety of environments and I made it a point to make use of all of them in this video.

Overall, I'm very happy with the turnout and I hope that viewers will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. I'm fairly sure most viewers will enjoy the ending.

Brothers of Liberty was only in exhibition at Otakon 2002 and did not compete since it wasn't finished until after the deadline. I had the video shown in the video gaming panel.
