Converting Problem

I'm not sure if this is the right place but if it isn't please move the topic.
I want to convert some Naruto episodes from .mkv to .avi or other extension that allows me to edit on vegas. I'm using Virtual Dub to convert it but the converted videos have 80 GB. Yeah, it's really GB. I think there is a way to compress that but I don't know how beacuase when I go Video>Compression I just have this:

I chose one but then I can't convert.

What shoul I do?

Did you install the huffyuv or UTvideo codec that came in the AMVapp package? It should be there.

UTvideo I guess would be the best choice, but I use huffyuv because it lays in QT. I think there is an osx version of UT, but I'm too lazy to do it. Huffyv is fine because I still have enough storage space. UT shrinks your video a lot better, I've heard.

UTVideo also works under QT, faster than in Windows even. UTVideo compression is significantly better than HuffYUV mostly due to a different scheme of huffman coding (length vs frequency) and having superior prediction models.

I've never gotten it to play in QT even with perian installed. Don't know how to make QT read UT. Any pointers, Hatt?

Copy utvideo.component to /Library/QuickTime/. Perian is useless as it is just an interface to an old ffmpeg/libav. New libav supports UTVideo decoding through a custom decoder however it isn't as fast as official.

Nope. That's the price of lossless codecs. They do not lose data (think of it as taking away all the filters you just put into it). I've been told not to keep it in lossless format forever. When you make your AMV, you can encode a select range of the clip you want from the episode. That way the only thing you need is still nice and takes up less space.

Your other option is to get a multi-terabyte external hard drive and store your lossless .avi there in folders.

You sould be ready to go from here on.
