Comments:
This song has been stuck in my head for probably the most longest time... Finally got a idea worth for the use of this song and here it is
Concept:
The Concept basically parodies the story as told in the video in a unique way. I wanted to kind of have the feel that all anime characters exist in a sort of a Russian perspective. Hence I used well over 250 photos of Russian Landscapes, buildings and landmarks with a large array of anime characters posing in front of. Since the song is from the 70s, I also kind of wanted to give it that retro feel and hence the use of the “Viewmaster” dices (who those who actually know what a Viewmaster was!
Upon watching Fullmetal Alchemist, the story seemed to have that Euro Asian look and thus I used it as the background from the story. The shoe in character to parody and twist the meaning of the story as told in the song was no other than Louis Armstrong as he fits the role perfectly. Other characters inlcude the “queen” as taken from Code Guess.
I wanted to showcase the actual singers and characters from both Azumanga Dio and Haruhi Suzumiya fit well.
Sync:
The song has a LOT of multi-beats that I wanted to take advantage of and as such worked perfectly with the rotation of the viewmaster disc. The Song actually is a bit longer and features more musical verses, but after exhausting all the slides I wanted to do, it was better to cut some of the verses of the song out as not to repeat things too much.
Effects:
This video took a lot longer to do then I thought it would, rendering all 250 backgrounds and cutting out 250 characters and then rendering them into looking like old photos and ensuring it looks natural tool a LOT of tome and work.
I wanted the view master disc to be in full resolution while rotating so the disc master size is well over 7000 pixels so that the slide window fits into 720p while rotating. This made rendering slow in After Effects. Lip sync and rotoscoping was them performed on the characters and various competitions, stills in old photographic colors were added to tell the story of long ago.
The video effects took so long in fact that I was very sort on time to make it in time for Sakura-Con. I spend the last several weeks working on it round the clock outside of work and it almost killed me…
All in All, I was very happy the way it turned out!
