  • Comments: I don't expect that many people will enjoy this video (or its sister video) quite as much as I do, and that's ok. If you know anything about my "ECS" series of videos, you know that the two I've released so far have been very slow, very loosely edited pieces set to ambient techno. This video pushes those characteristics even further -- the song is an entirely ambient track, and the editing here is by far the loosest I've ever done.

While I do really enjoy both of my other ECS videos, neither is exactly what I envisioned when I started making this series. Both ended up being vaguely narrative in their scene selection, when I wanted them to focus strictly on the setting/environment that their respective anime take place in. I wanted the viewer to feel like they were going on a tour through the cities in the anime, not being involved in any of the happenings but just observing the grimy alleyways and sewers in order to really get into the mood that the settings evoked. I think I kind of achieved this with these videos, but not to the degree that I had originally intended. I also ended up feeling like they were a bit more tightly synced than I had wanted.

This ended up being a hugely experimental experience. In order to de-focus my tendencies to sync, and to focus my scene selection on strictly setting-based scenes and to minimize the number of scenes I used that suggested some kind of overarching story, I actually decided not to listen to the music as I put most of this video together. After laying the audio track on the timeline, I took off my headphones and started placing scenes on the timeline without any regard to the actual music, except for the obvious points in the waveform where I wanted to do some slight sync. The result was that this process helped me to hone in heavily on the mood of the song and center my scene selection around that; although I fixed and moved some things by listening to the music after most of the video had been placed on the timeline, the majority of this video was edited "deaf". It was a unique experience, although admittedly less fun than the average video. But I think it ended up helping me to achieve the results I've been after for a long time now.

The time for editing this video was short -- maybe an hour and a half for the whole thing. In fact, because it was so short and easy to put together, I ended up deciding to make two versions of this video, the other using a different Burial track with a bit more actual musical structure. Both videos have very largely the same scene selection, presented in the same order. The song for the other video is longer, so I couldn't just swap out the music track; I had to add scenes and do some minor sync adjustments throughout to get it to look how I wanted. But that one was edited in largely the same way as this one, i.e. mostly "deaf". I like both videos equally, although they give off slightly different vibes to me. YMMV.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy one or both of these videos; they both ended up scratching an itch I've had for a little while to put together something quick and mood-heavy.
