  • Comments: Near the end of 2021 I played Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. It's a series that had never interested me before, and there was nothing specifically that drew me to it -- I just wanted to play something I had never really tried before and it had been a minute since I picked up a flight sim of any kind, so I found a copy for PS4 and gave it a go. I was absolutely floored by how much I enjoyed it -- it ended up being one of my favorite video game experiences ever up to that point, just pure adrenaline and fun distilled into the most satisfying gameplay imaginable. I hope I'm not overselling it, but I also desperately want more people to check this game out because it's a totally overlooked gem that did not get the recognition it deserved.

As I was playing it, I couldn't help but take note of the beautiful cinematics. On top of this, the game has a fantastically intricate cinema mode, where after every mission you can watch your playthrough of it and change camera angles, POV, etc. to get these visually stunning replays which you can then save. It's a really cool feature, and while I didn't have the patience to do this myself, others on YouTube have cut and spliced all the cinematics and tons of gameplay footage into a full-length movie. I grabbed this and used it as the source for this GMV.

This video had been sitting on my HDD, cut up and ready to go, for over a year. I had been searching off and on for the right song pretty much that entire time, but nothing was clicking so the idea just simmered. It wasn't until almost a year after I finished the game that I was riding in the car with my brother-in-law Zeke, and he played this song for me. The lightbulb lit up, this was what I had been searching for that whole time. After that I just needed the actual motivation to sit down and start editing, and the RICE contest provided exactly that. (For those who don't know, RICE is a yearly contest held for editors in the BentoVid Discord server, where everyone who enters a video is both a participant in the contest and a judge for all the other videos. It is judged blind, so nobody knows who made what.)

I actually almost didn't get this finished in time for the contest. The other video I recently uploaded, Bless My Soul, was my first priority. I finished that quicker than expected, and thought I might have a chance to get this one done too so I set to work. This was an incredibly fun video to edit, but way outside my wheelhouse as action editing and I don't typically play nice...however, I really loved working with this source and this all just kind of fell into place really easily. This video got pretty great reception in the contest, and I loved reading everyone's reactions to it. I tweaked a handful of very small things throughout the video, so it is slightly different from the contest version, but they're also probably things that only I noticed. It was a finalist in the Action category, which was incredibly stacked -- poor thing didn't have a chance -- HOWEVER this video tied for Coordinator's Choice in RICE, an honor I'm very proud of.

Also, he wouldn't know this, but Sean.PNG's We Are Overwatch GMV was the video that made me actually want to use video game footage in the first place. So, please go watch that video too!

(Side-note: I never, ever name my videos after the songs I use because I always find that naming convention to be very boring, but I couldn't come up with a single title that was better than "Supersonic"; also, in 2007 I made an Animatrix AMV titled "Subsonic", so the connection was irresistible. Oh well.)

    Technical notes:
Editing in Magix Vegas 15.0. Total editing time was probably 10-12 hours over a handful of days.
