  • Comments: I made this video specifically for the AMV panel at AnimeNext 2004, which took place Friday evening at 10 pm (June 18th). This video went with our "Fine Tuning and Easy Things to Avoid" section. After discussing all the various artistic elements that go into making an anime music video, we shifted over into the technical aspects. First, we showed a blank version of this video, with no text on-screen. After the video finished playing, we asked those in the audience to raise their hands and each mention one thing they found in the video that they would do differently. Once we got through everything (that is, everything they could pick out... which I believe was everything and then some!), I played back the version that you can find for download, which contains some on-screen, explanitory text.

In no way is this video meant to be derogatory towards anyone who may make these kinds of edits and such in their videos; as the section title mentions, our goal was to point out things that you could "fine tune" in your editing.

When you're creating an anime music video, you're taking two things that were absolutely never meant to go with each other (the music and the footage)... and putting them together. Anything that you do that reminds the viewer that these things weren't originally supposed to go together removes them from your narrative flow. Things like the DivX logo, Cartoon Network logo, orphan frames, badly looped footage, cheesy transitions, and dubbed audio can distract your audience, and that's the last thing you want to do.

Yes, everything "weird" about this video is intentional, including the obvious MP3-source audio. I edited the video with whatever source I had on my computer at the time, which included DragonBall Z, Street Fighter II V, and the original Rurouni Kenshin OVA.

Hopefully you can laugh along with the video, and if you even get something informative out of it, that's even better!
